Meet Marquita

Marquita and her family

For quite some time, Marquita has watched her hard earned money from her career as a Registered Medical Assistant go toward rent instead of homeownership. Her current living situation has proven challenging as the space is simply too small for her family.  In addition, its location outside of town has made it difficult for her children’s ability to get involved in extracurricular activities at their schools. One of Marquita’s friends since high school had previously partnered with the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity to build her safe, decent, affordable home. Marquita saw her friend’s experience and knew it was an opportunity that she could not let pass by her and her family.  After applying, Marquita put it to the back of her mind to prevent herself from getting too excited about the opportunity, unsure if she would qualify for selection. But, it was only about a month later that she received the life changing news that she was now a partner family.  Along with great joy  was the realization of what a big process this opportunity entailed, and she has admitted that the journey can at times be overwhelming. Paperwork can seem tremendous.  Trying to juggle children, career, attending Habitat meetings, and earning the required sweat equity hours where she works on her home and the homes of others can also prove challenging.  But, Marquita knows that at the end of this experience she will be the proud owner of a home that provides enough room for her family and opens the door to new opportunities that come with homeownership. Marquita's biggest encourager is her mother, who noted from an early age that Marquita had a heart for helping others.  Marquita spends her days doing just that. Habitat now has the opportunity to help her experience being cared for as the community rallies around her family to help them build their dream.

UPDATE- The home has been finished and dedicated!  Read the story HERE.
