Welcome Latrice and family!
On a recent sunny Saturday afternoon, one new homeowner gathered with family, friends, and the community to celebrate as the newest Piedmont Habitat for Humanity home was dedicated.
The program began with a welcome by Amy Griffin, chairperson for the Nottoway County Committee, where she recognized many special guests, including local and state government officials. Also noted were the many efforts of the Piedmont Habitat Board of Directors and members of the Nottoway County Committee. Mary Shepherd, Volunteer Coordinator/Office Manager, continued with an opening prayer, giving thanks to God for making this work possible.
Sam Rabon, Interim Executive Director, shared the history of Piedmont Habitat and how it all started back in 1990 as Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity with a group of volunteers and is now a six-county endeavor. He shared how Piedmont Habitat as an organization is “seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.” Sam also had the chance to talk about Habitat’s incredible partners who made this home possible in large part through a grant from Virginia Housing. Additional project funding came from Centra Health. Cardinal Homes of Charlotte County, who built these modular homes in their controlled environment before delivering to the site for final setting on the foundation. Instrumental in this project was the new partnership with Southside Homes, a local builder who oversaw construction of the home once it was set on site.
Frank Curbeira from Virginia Housing (VH) spoke about the mission of their statewide housing organization, and how Latrice’s house is one of five homes Virginia Housing is funding across the state to celebrate their 50th year anniversary!
Every Habitat partner family has a wonderful story and it was no different with Latrice. Latrice dedicated tireless hours of work in transforming this lot into a beautiful place she and her kids can call home. All who have worked alongside them have not only been a blessing to them but been blessed by them in the process.
A word of blessing was then offered by Russell Dove, Community Outreach Director from Piedmont Habitat, with the prayer that Latrice and her family would experience the love, joy, peace, and hope of God in their new home.
Following this was the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the home and a delicious reception, made possible by the kindness of Blackstone Walmart, and members of the Nottoway County Committee. The day concluded with people lingering to talk and congratulate the new homeowner and her family. Work on two more Habitat homes in Nottoway County continues, with the day for that ribbon cutting eagerly anticipated.
Piedmont Habitat for Humanity serves individuals and families who have a demonstrated need for an improved housing solution, the ability to pay an affordable mortgage or repair loan and are willing to partner with Habitat through volunteering as able.
