Meet Pam
Pam and her two children have been renting their home built on family land since 2004. This home was once a hunting cabin owned by Pam’s family and was added on to room by room over the years by her grandfather and father. One can imagine that living in an old hunting cabin comes with a complex set of challenges. For Pam, these have included electrical difficulties, structural issues, and several other health and safety concerns. Pam was involved in an accident last year, that combined with an already existing medical condition, has left her unable to work. Her current home is not easily accessible for her. On top of this she has a need for a monthly mortgage that is less expensive than her current rent. The affordability concern is made more difficult as her current home is not at all energy efficient due to the manner in which it was enlarged over the years. The process left many gaps throughout the house that create sky-high utility bills each month. Knowing that the cost of improving on the family home is too much for Pam, her family has been generous enough to donate family owned land on which to build as a new partner family with the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity. Pam’s youngest daughter is most looking forward to her new bedroom where she can have a closet that will allow her to keep her room organized and a window that will easily open and allow in fresh air. Pam is most looking forward to having lower monthly bills and the ability to save money for college and a nest egg. She also looks forward to what many families take for granted, the ability to possibly take a family vacation without needing to save for it for many years. Pam is grateful to have an extended family which supports her in her Habitat journey and who are ready to help her start building. And now she can count on the support of Habitat and the volunteers and donors who will embrace her as family.
